Find Your Shape
Step 1: Measure Yourself

To determine which of the 5 classic body shapes most closely matches your own, you will need a measuring tape, calculator and a mirror. (Don’t worry – it’s simple!)

First, use the measuring tape to measure the circumference of your body at the shoulders in inches, right underneath your collar bone. Check in the mirror to be sure the measuring tape is parallel to the floor the whole way around your body, and is not ‘drooping’ at the back. Write this measurement down. Next, repeat this process at your waistline (about 2 inches above your belly button), and your hips (the widest part of your hips and buttocks). Write these measurements down as well.

  • If your waist measurement is the largest of the 3 measurements, then you have an apple shape.
  • If the waist measurement is smaller than one or both other measurements:
  • Multiply your shoulder measurement by 0.95. If the result is larger than your hip measurement then you have a strawberry shape.
  • Multiply your shoulder measurement by 0.95. If the result is smaller than your hip measurement:
  • If you divide the hip measurement by the shoulder measurement and get a result of 1.05 or higher then you have a pear shape.
  • If you divide the waist measurement by the shoulder measurement and the waist measurement by the hip measurement and both results are smaller than 0.75 then you have an hourglass shape.
  • If you divide the waist measurement by the shoulder measurement and the waist measurement by the hip measurement and both results are equal to or larger than 0.75 then you have a rectangle shape.
  • It is possible for you to fall into more than one category – this means that you can shop for styles that flatter either shape and get a great fit!
